Interview with ”Emil” - my life with assistance
Emil is a fictitious name, as the client wishes to remain anonymous in this interview.
Emil had a stroke, which led to him receiving assistance. At first he lived in a nursing home, but was then allowed to come home, with personal assistance. A staff member chose to accompany him home from the nursing home, which was much appreciated as the person had already gotten to know him.
Emil is an active person, who likes to travel, both abroad and in the local area. Many trips by car
it will be. Abroad, the trips have included Scotland and Spain. To Spain, Emil went
with an assistant on a training trip aimed at stroke survivors.
Emil says that the most important thing about a personal assistant is that they are nice and that he as
assistance user and personal assistant are on the "same level". Being on the "same level" means
that they can communicate well. It is also important that they can cook well and that they have
driving license, as Emil likes to drive around. If things don't work out with the assistant, Emil usually talks to
the Area Manager who is responsible. As an area manager, it is important to listen and take on board what Emil
says. Emil thinks it is important, as it is in his home that the assistants will work.
The best thing about having personal assistance is to have an extended arm, Emil thinks, so that he can do
what he wants. Living the life he wants to live. He is satisfied with the assistance he has today and thinks that everything
works well. Finding good substitutes is the challenge today. Emil believes that this is because
personal assistants are underpaid, as it is difficult to find people.
